OnePlastic

OnePlastic tackles energy poverty where women and girls bear the greatest burden. It replaces unsafe candles and kerosene with ultra-low-cost solar light made from waste

OnePlastic is a design-led, gender-responsive energy project that transforms waste into opportunity for women and girls in energy-poor communities. The project produces ultra-low-cost solar lanterns made from recycled plastic bottles and repurposed lithium-ion batteries recovered from electronic waste. These lanterns provide safe, clean lighting for households that currently depend on candles and kerosene.
Beyond the product, OnePlastic is built as a women-centered system. Solar charging stations are installed within communities and are managed by trained rural women who earn income as charging operators, repair technicians, and customer leads. This removes common barriers to energy adoption such as high upfront costs, lack of local repair, and dependence on external vendors.
By combining circular design, simple technology, and community ownership, OnePlastic reduces plastic pollution, improves household safety and health, and expands economic opportunities for women. Children can study at night without smoke or fire risk, women extend productive hours, and communities gain a locally controlled energy solution.
OnePlastic demonstrates how inclusive design and innovation can advance gender equality while delivering affordable, clean energy where it is needed most.
