EcoBana addresses period poverty and plastic waste by redesigning menstrual products using inclusive, sustainable materials that ensure dignity, affordability, and environmental equity.
EcoBana is a design-driven circular manufacturing project that redefines menstrual health products through sustainability, inclusivity, and local innovation. The project converts banana agricultural waste into biodegradable sanitary pads that are affordable, safe, and accessible to women and girls in underserved communities. By redesigning both materials and production systems, EcoBana replaces plastic-heavy, imported products with locally manufactured alternatives that reflect the needs and realities of users.
Beyond the product itself, the project integrates community engagement, menstrual health education, and inclusive employment, particularly for women and youth. We demonstrates how thoughtful, equitable design can transform waste into dignity, reduce environmental harm, and build resilient local economies positioning menstrual health not as a luxury, but as a fundamental human need addressed through innovation.
