Designing Equality through Community-Led Circular Innovation

Women and girls in informal settlements face health risks and economic exclusion from waste systems. ReAfric creates safe, income-generating circular opportunities led by women.

ReAfric is a community-led circular economy project that transforms discarded textiles and used car tyres from informal settlements into marketable shoe products and dignified livelihoods. Working primarily with women and youth, the project integrates local waste collection, low-cost recycling and upcycling and skills development to address waste pollution, unemployment and environmental injustice.
Designed in collaboration with communities, ReAfric treats informal settlements as innovation hubs rather than waste endpoints. By diverting waste from open dumping and burning, the project improves public health and environmental conditions while creating income opportunities and leadership pathways for women and youth. The model is low-cost, adaptable and scalable across resource-constrained urban contexts, offering a practical pathway to inclusive circular economies that advance social equity, environmental sustainability and economic resilience.
